Corpse Bride and Incarnate Demon

I love sensational headlines from old newspapers.  Particularly in the case of death announcements.  While researching the Hallocks of Coles County, IL, who had a marriage or two with members of my family a few generations back, I came across a couple gems last night.

In 1918, Hattie married my 2nd cousin, twice removed, at age 17. Then she caught the Spanish flu and died about four weeks later.  The obituary didn't even get her name right and called her Nettie.

And George, whose nephew married into my family, died in 1927, a day after his birthday.  And he didn't get injured at his party.  The paralysis was apparently pre-existing.

I visited Hattie's grave about a year back, at Enon Cemetery near Ashmore, IL

Her poor husband Ira eventually remarried, about five years later.

I am absolutely fascinated by genealogy.  Not only my own direct family, which I can only go so far back with, but also of those who married into my family.  For instance, the Harlan family of Clark County, Illinois.  Back in 1869, Edwin Harlan married Mary Elizabeth Bartlett, my 1st cousin, 6 times removed.  The previous year, Edwin's cousin Mary Eunice Harlan had married Robert Todd Lincoln, whose father Abraham had been our 16th President.  Sure, there are several generations, and two marriages, separating Honest Abe and me, but I just love making discoveries like this.  I mean, we are practically brothers, right?  And the "removed" thing isn't as complicated as it sounds, though frequently misused.  Basically, my 6th-Great Grandparents, Ebenezer and Jane, were Mary Bartlett's Grandparents

I think I really need to add some Abraham Lincoln cards to my collection.  I don't have many.

Here is one, taken from Trading Card Database.  I really like this particular Panini Americana set, which primarily features Presidents, Astronauts, Tuskegee Airmen, and the U.S. Women's Soccer Team.  A very odd assortment, which makes it a fun set for me to collect.  The photo used was taken by Alexander Gardner in February 1865.  A month later, when Lincoln's second term began, his son Robert escorted teenage Mary Harlan to the inauguration.  A month after that, the Civil War ended, and Lincoln was assassinated.  As you could read in National Police Gazette:
